Our Story

A new hospitality category: the Luxury Eco-Culture Lodge

VuliZulu introduces a new category in hospitality: the Luxury Eco-Culture Lodge. Rooted in active engagement over passive observation, and the contemporary over the nostalgic, we place guests in exquisite accommodations across Africa's most breathtaking landscapes. Every day is anchored by community experiences designed for deep human connection and mutual learning. Community benefit isn't a byproduct — it is the very architecture of the experience.

A lodge rooted in restoration

VuliZulu means "To Open the Heavens" in isiZulu. It creates a gateway for cultural exchange, regenerative travel, and the restoration of community and environment. The lodge stands on family land in Ophondweni, KwaZulu-Natal, entrusted through a traditional union and community relationship.

Founders

VuliZulu is co-founded by Kurt Isaacs and Iain Harris. Iain founded the Pan-African Fair Trade Certified tour operator Coffeebeans Experiences and the destination management company Creative Travel Africa, with 20+ years pioneering responsible tourism. Kurt founded Sawubona ZA and Authentic Engagement; he is an Asset-Based Community Development practitioner.

A living model of regeneration

VuliZulu is built and operated with the community, not for it. Local craft, culture, and cuisine are woven into every aspect of the experience, creating a circular economy that benefits the village directly.
